As we all know teen skin can be a bit of a rollercoaster ride. I was there. Most people I know were there but what’s fascinating now is that because we have SO many ‘gurus’ at our finger-tips, it’s actually harder than ever to know what advice to follow.
We're here to guide you through the ups and downs of teenage skincare while keeping it fresh, fun, and oh-so effective based on 27 years of work as an esthetician.
Understanding Teen Skin
Teen skin is like an ever-changing landscape—thank you, hormones. As your body goes through puberty, those hormones can lead to an increase in oil production. This can result in acne, blackheads, and more than the occasional breakoute.
While it is a phase, and your skin will likely settle down there are things to do to get your skin looking more glowing, more moisturized, and more soothe right now. As in this month.
The Teen Skincare Arsenal
-
Cleanse, please!
Start your skincare journey with a gentle cleanser. It's your first line of defense against oil and impurities. Look for one that suits your skin type, whether it's oily, dry, or sensitive. An oil cleanser that mimics your skin’s nature sebum (the oil in your skin), works best.
-
Smooth and Soothe
Acne is often a part of the teen skincare adventure. Seek products with ingredients like salicylic acid to target pimples.
-
Hydrate and Hydrate
Even if your skin feels oily, it still needs hydration. Keep your skin balanced. The best moisturizer for teens, again, is one that mimics the sebum. Also, I can’t stress this enough. Take your weight, divide by two, that’s the number of ounces of water a day you need to stay hydrated. Hydrate body = hydrated skin.
Hydrate body = hydrated skin.
-
Suncare
Sunscreen is your best friend. Protect your skin from UV rays with a broad-spectrum SPF. It's the secret to keeping your skin youthful and healthy. Our two favorites are Suntegrity (bit pricey but great) and Acure.
-
Self-Care
Stress can wreak havoc on your skin. Practice relaxation techniques like yoga or meditation to keep your stress levels in check. Happy thoughts, happy skin.
Skincare Habits for Teens
-
Consistency Wins
Stick to a skincare routine and be patient. Results take time, and consistency is your secret weapon. Your skin only wants to experience new things every so often, not all at once. Try one thing for 30 days, if it works you can add another but don’t throw the kitchen skin at your skin—it will make things worse.
-
Hands Off, Please
Resist the urge to pick or pop pimples. It can lead to scarring and worsen the situation. It also leads to bacteria within the pimple and trust, once that happens, more people will notice what happened than the pimple to begin with.
-
Clean = Clear Skin
A balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies can work wonders for your complexion. This also goes for everything you put in and one your body—toothpaste, body wash, fragrance, etc.
-
No Harsh Scrubs
Avoid overly abrasive scrubs as they can irritate your skin. Stick to gentle exfoliants once or twice a week. Not to toot our own horn too much but the BG Honey Mask is an acne wizard.
-
Sleeeeeeep!
Sleep is when your skin rejuvenates. Aim for 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night. And if you can use an oil that helps to rebuild and rebalance your skin during this super healing window of time for your skin.
